Resilience of the Grand Paris
Express to health crises In addition to the measures taken in response
to the 2020 Covid-19 crisis to keep people
safe and manage worksites, Société du
Grand Paris teams also assessed the
impact of the crisis on Grand Paris Express
infrastructure and held discussions with
various stakeholders (suppliers, operators,
networks in other countries) with the aim of
identifying solutions to improve the resilience
of the new metro.
Even though personal protection (wearing
a mask, social distancing, etc.) still offers
the most effective prevention during the
Covid-19 crisis, it is impossible to guarantee
compliance by all passengers. This is why
the design features of the Grand Paris
Express have been analysed with regard
to following intrinsic health issues:
surface and air contamination;
the presence of viral vectors;
the means of communicating health
information, monitoring the health of users
and ensuring compliance with instructions;
the means of evaluating and modulating
the use of the network;
the means to maintain adequate
conditions of maintenance and operation.
Conclusions: Thanks to their design, the
stations and trains of the Grand Paris Express
provide a more advanced level of resilience
than other transport networks currently
in service. The way it will be operated
will ensure that sufficient traffic can be
accommodated and maintained to deal
with any health-related restrictions. The
characteristics of the metro with its platform
screens and doors and the configuration of
equipment such as ventilation and lifts will
reduce air and surface contamination
and exposure to risks for passengers and
maintenance operators alike. Société du
Grand Paris is currently considering further
solutions based on the technological
advances made during the Covid-19 crisis.
A simplified Maintenance
Requirements Programme To improve the traceability of the
Maintenance Requirements Programme
(MRP) in Société du Grand Paris contracts,
simplified programmes have been developed
for Lines 15, 16 and 17, and work has begun
on designing those for Line 18. They specify
in particular those elements that project
managers need to check. These elements
are the requirements transferred by RATP
Infrastructures, in consultation with
the programme manager, to the project
managers. This is so that they can take
them into account with a view to reducing
maintenance costs, aligning and pooling
maintenance methods and tools, and
simplifying maintenance organisational
structures. A transport operator MRP has
been produced for stations, in collaboration
with Île-de-France Mobilités.
Following the initial feedback on the MRPs
for Lines 15, 16 and 17, the simplified MRPs
have been adapted to the design-build lines,
classifying all the requirements and ensuring
that the MRP requirements are consistent
with those of Société du Grand Paris.
The designer-builders will be required to
follow and apply the MRP.
