Positive opinion on
the ecological equivalence
of Line 17 North In October 2018, the government agencies
asked Société du Grand Paris, as part of
an environmental requirement, to work on
the development of a method to analyse
quantitatively the potential gains in
biodiversity resulting from the offsetting
measures.
Given the lack of a national methodological
framework, Société du Grand Paris called
on CDC Biodiversité to develop a specific
method suited to the characteristics of the
Grand Paris Express. This method is used
to calculate net losses/gains in biodiversity
and determine whether the no net loss in
biodiversity objective has been achieved.
The study was launched in the second half of
2019 and the method developed (in French)
was applied on the Line 17 North project
in summer 2020. Despite a number of
limitations caused by the complexity of
the field, the various bodies consulted
(CDC Biodiversité s scientific committee,
the French Biodiversity Office OFB,
the General Commission for Sustainable
Development CGDD) issued positive
opinions of the method.
Société du Grand Paris continuously monitors the environmental issues at stake in the areas
affected by the project. When new issues are identified, or when changes to the project pose a
risk for protected species, the need for new offsetting measures is assessed, and new measures
are proposed with partners.
Planting/replanting initiatives are also planned as part of restoring rights-of-way once the works
are completed, with the aim of providing added value for local biodiversity.
