involved at some 130 worksites and the coordination
between these sites themselves. Making sure that
any difficulties encountered in this area do not
automatically create new obstacles elsewhere
requires constant attention to this interface
management aspect. Taking up this challenge at
a time when meetings were either impossible
or severely limited required that Société
du Grand Paris show true adaptability.
The third and last challenge is that of a sense of
urgency. In addition to their specific, day-to-day
duties, all Société du Grand Paris employees know
that they are working first and foremost to improve
people s lives. Delivering a modern, reliable
and efficient transport network to the people of
Île-de-France, increasing the opportunities for
everyone in the region to find jobs or carry out their
work, and providing everyone with access to culture,
healthcare and leisure activities on an unprecedented
scale are all factors that give Société du Grand Paris
employees a deep sense of purpose and
responsibility. At a time when the consequences
of the crisis are inevitably affecting the completion
times of these complex projects, we have also had to
find the resources to deal with them.
I would like to express my appreciation for the work
of the Management Board and the company s
employees who have all risen to the challenges
of this extraordinary year to keep the project
moving forward.
When I took up my post as Chairman of the Société
du Grand Paris management board on 22 March
2020, I took a fresh look at the vision expressed in
2010 by those involved in this major project. This
vision is not only intact, but undoubtedly stronger:
the needs and expectations are huge. A study carried
out in December 2020 shows that 85% of Parisians
believe that the Grand Paris Express will make it easier
for them to get around. And 91% of the region s
students say that the new metro will make it easier
for them to get to their colleges and universities.
Awareness of the benefits of the new metro is
beginning to build, and the tremendous potential
for growth, openness and improvement in daily life is
becoming increasingly apparent.
This new transport network is beginning to be seen
for what it really is: a social network for tomorrow.
Almost all the Grand Paris Express stations are
connected to one or more of the existing transport
services, creating a network that opens up a whole
new world of possibilities for everyone. At a time
when virtual networks, despite the many
opportunities they offer, are laying bare the limits
and occasional dangers of this virtual world, the Grand
Paris Express makes it crystal clear that connections
in the real world also help us build a better future.
It is with this ambition in mind that we embark on
2021. Société du Grand Paris will still have to
overcome a number of difficulties to meet our
challenges. The impact of the pandemic on our
roadmap must be made perfectly clear.
The eco-friendly credentials of the Grand Paris
Express are part of our country s environmental
strategy and require us to run this project in an ever
more exemplary way.
I have complete confidence in our ability to achieve
this.
"The Grand Paris Express must be viewed holistically. It is this bigger picture that I will champion."
